Comedian Kathy Griffin thought that she was telling a joke when she told Jesus to “suck it” after winning an Emmy. She makes a living being outrageous and making fun of others but Christians didn’t find her comments funny at all and many even in Hollywood found her comments to be distasteful.
She was playing on the fact that so many thank God or even Jesus when they win awards particularly in sports. Here are her complete remarks (which were later censored):
“I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. … So all I can say is, suck it, Jesus. This reward is my god now!”
Comments: Christians react to such remarks with sadness rather than anger. It hurts to see the name of the Lord as an object of a joke and as fodder for a ‘D-list’ comedian. We might even laugh along with any joke made at the expense of a Christian leader or two, but we draw the line when it comes to our Lord Jesus Christ. Slights like this bring only sadness.
My only suggestion for Ms. Griffin is that she makes sure to never make fun of Islam’s Muhammad, it could be bad for her future health.
