Mark Steyn has written a very interesting editorial on the Afghan Christian convert case. He points out that ‘the moderates’ in Hamid Karzais’ government are attempting to have Abdul Rahman (the Christian convert) declared unfit by reason of insanity. After all, in the context of Afghanistan, “anyone who converts from Islam to Christianity must, ipso facto, be nuts.” Imam Abdul Raoulf, a leading religious authority on the Afghan Ulama Council, proclaims that this compromise would be unacceptable to the leading clerics-“We will not allow God to be humiliated. This man must die, cut off his head! We will call on the people to pull him into pieces so there’s nothing left.” There you have it, another call for mercy from the authorities of the ‘Religion of Peace’. This really does point out the divide between western civilization and the current Islamic culture. As David Warren (Canadian columnist) puts it: We take it for granted that it is wrong to kill someone for his religious beliefs. Whereas Islam holds it is wrong not to kill him.”
Actually, I really don’t like the insanity plea myself. After all, I can just hear some of our esteemed secular western academics proclaiming–“that’s what we been saying for years, all these fundamentalist religious nuts-Islamists, Christians, Jews and the like- all suffer from some kind of mental disorder.” Oh well! There are also many of us ‘conservatives’ who supposedly did not play well in nursery school.
