Gillian Gibbons, a British teacher serving in Sudan, was sentenced today to serve 15 days in jail and deportation from the country.
The teacher had allowed her students to name a teddy bear Muhammad and had initially faced 40 lashes, 6 months in prison and a fine for blasphemy against Islam.
Comments: Fortunately cooler heads prevailed when it finally became clear that the perceived slight of Islam was entirely unintentional. Nevertheless, 15 days does seem rather much for the mistake.
Hopefully the teacher will be protected until she is out of the country.
