-Supreme Court Throws Out Ruling Against Christian Bakers

by Dr. D ~ June 19th, 2019

The Supreme Court on Monday threw out a ruling against a Christian couple in Oregon who were fined for not baking a cake for a gay wedding. Here’s the story from the Christian Post:

… the high court vacated an earlier ruling against Aaron and Melissa Klein, a Christian couple from Oregon who lost their bakery and were ordered to pay $135,000 in damages for refusing to make a cake for a same-sex wedding in 2013.

The Supreme Court sent the case back to the Court of Appeals of Oregon “for further consideration” due to the 2018 decision in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission.

Response: We have been following this case for some time. The Christian couple had lost their bakery and were in danger of losing everything if they were forced to actually pay the huge fine levied against them for upholding their religious beliefs.

The Supreme Court threw the Oregon ruling out based upon their own ruling in the Masterpiece Cakeshop of Colorado case which was similar. The rulings of the present SCOTUS court continue to demonstrate substantial support for religious freedom. It will be interesting to see how the Appeals courts respond.

This ruling reminds us how important presidential elections can be. The two Supreme Court justices appointed by President Trump played a major part in preserving religious freedom in these two ‘cake’ cases. It is not hard to imagine that the vote might have been far less supportive if Hillary Clinton had won and had made two very different appointments to the high court.               *Top
