-Marriage in Flux: “Fixed-Term” Another Option?

Changing the traditional definition of marriage to include same-sex couples has opened the door to all sorts of ideas on what other combinations might be legally included in the future. To date we have written about activists pushing for ‘all of the above’ including polygamy, polyamory, incest, bestiality, with robots and even with one’s self. Now here’s an academic pushing for ‘Fixed-Term’ marriages. From Charisma News:

Traditional marriage vows would be better replaced by a fixed-term contract, an author and academic has claimed.  …

Jeanette Winterson:

“We need to be more imaginative about modern marriage", the professor also attacked organized religion.

"If we are to reform marriage, the first and most important step is to nullify the power of religion to dictate the rights of individuals over their own bodies. And over their own hearts."

She added: "We are all living longer, and not all of us can stay with that same one person forever. Marriage has always been a contract, so why not discuss fixed-term contracts?

"A fixed term might allow both parents to feel less pressure and more responsibility," she said, questioning whether traditional vows amount to "liberation or a life sentence."

Response: Years ago when same-sex marriage first came up we wrote about how changing the definition of marriage could initiate a slippery slope that might open the door to the possibility of all sorts of legalized perversions. The seeds are now being sowed for that unfortunate reality.

Some will say that we already have ‘defacto’  ‘do-it-your-self’ fixed-term marriage in place due to  easy no-fault divorce.. Why not make it a legal option? In reality fixed-term marriages would cause all sorts of economic and legal chaos. All you have to do is watch Judge Judy a couple of times and see what kind of messes couples get into living together for a short term. Making it ‘legal’ would only add to the confusion. There would not be enough judges in the world to handle it all.

Tragically the children living in the midst of a fixed-term relationship would be affected most of all. Can you imagine a child counting the days and telling his teacher and friends at school that his whole life is about to be turned upside down because his parents ‘term’ is over in a few days?

The fact is that the same legal basis that had judges in the last five years ruling in favor of including same-sex marriage  could now be used to include all sorts of different arrangements all in the name of equal rights.

In the process, marriage and the traditional family unit and society itself will suffer the consequences. Jeanette Winterson is correct, the real battle is against religion, the Bible, and God in particular. The war has been declared but many Christians are choosing to go along with the culture and do not see the increasing dangers and challenges to their own religious freedom.               *Top

The author, Jeannette Winterson, is also a Lesbian. Thus, the link between the institution of gay marriage and the “slippery slope” is much closer than the article indicates.
