-The Rebuilding of St. Nicholas Church at Ground Zero

by Dr. D ~ December 6th, 2016

A cross was placed a week ago upon the top of a new dome rising up at Ground Zero in NY City. It is about time.

When the World Trade Center buildings went down on September 11, 2001, a tiny Greek Orthodox church- St. Nicholas was destroyed in their wake. After a lengthy battle with NY City officials, who did not want anything religious acknowledged at the site, the church is finally being resurrected. Now a cross symbolically has risen up to fly over and spiritually redeem an area which saw nothing but destruction and death in the name of different religion (See the beautiful new design in the video above).

Here’s the story from the NY Times:

The topping out of the shrine with the cross was a milestone in the tortuous effort to rebuild St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, a little parish outpost at 155 Cedar Street in Lower Manhattan that was destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001, when the south trade center tower fell on it.

And it is more than that. The cross is the first overtly religious symbol to appear in the public realm at the World Trade Center, where officials have often contorted themselves to maintain a secular air. (What almost everyone knows as the “World Trade Center cross,” for instance, is officially referred to as the “intersecting steel beam.”)

Response: We have been following this story for some time now. It was a real ‘spiritual’ battle to get the church rebuilt upon the site.

The secular city leaders did not want anything religious on the site. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officials were responsible for supervising the rebuilding at Ground Zero. They wanted to build a parking structure where the church used to be and offered to give the church property in another area as compensation. It became a ‘national’ issue that was finally resolved in the church’s favor.

The apologetic PC comments by the Port Authority official demonstrates that they still do not accept or understand the real significance of the cross rising up once more where it once stood in the shadow of the huge World Trade Center buildings:

“We welcome on this site all denominations, all creeds, all walks of life and all religions.”

Which is as it should be at that the over all memorial site. But on that day they were celebrating the rising up and blessing of  a ‘Justinian Cross’ upon the top of a new Greek Orthodox Christian Church being built upon sacred land that had been owned by the church for one hundred years. Long before there even was a World Trade Center.

Even more significant is the history of the entire track of land on which the world Trade center sits. At one time it had all been sacred dedicated Christian land owned by St. Paul’s Chapel. A church where President Washington attended while the national capitol was in New York City. It was also the site where all the officials of the newly formed US government, including Washington and the members of Congress, went together to pray over the new Constitutional republic on the first Inauguration Day, April 30, 1789.

Point is, there is far more religious and spiritual history to that land than anyone wants to acknowledge in our more secular PC culture and times.               *Top
