-Iraqi Christians Praying for Their ISIS Enemies?

by Dr. D ~ November 15th, 2016

Jesus taught his followers to pray for their enemies and that is exactly what Iraqi Christians are doing. ISIS has destroyed churches, has persecuted and killed Christians, and forced women and children into slavery but the Christians continue to pray. Here’s the story from Christianity Today:

An Iraqi priest has described Christians as the "salt" which his country needs.  …

Father Martin also pointed out that Iraqi Christians are following Jesus’ words and praying for those who’ve persecuted them. ‘"They are – every time they are praying – every time. They are also praying for ISIS to – to God have mercy on them, to make them a good people. They are praying for their – for their enemies."

Here’s another article about Iraqi Christians rejoicing as they worship for the first time in two years in a church that was desecrated by ISIS but recently taken back from the terrorist group. From Christianity Today:

Father Thabet currently ministers to his displaced congregation in Erbil, but has returned to Karamles several times now. …

"I am so happy I can do this. I’m smiling from cheek to cheek and I weep tears of joy at the same time," he said at the time, according to World Watch Monitor. "This is the trip I have been praying for, for two years now."

"My dream is to bring all the Christians back to this village. Then we will worship outside on Barbara Hill; we will have the Eucharist in the open air," he added. "Everybody will see that this is the Church; this is the Body of Christ; this is Christian land. That is my dream – to give a testimony to the world."

Response: It is nearly impossible for Western Christians and Americans in particular to even imagine what these folks have faced and have gone through with their faith still intact. How many of us would choose to pray for our enemies after our homes, churches, and communities had been destroyed?

Hopefully a new American administration will finally help these displaced Christians in the Middle East. The current administration has gone out of its way to help Muslim refugees but not the Christians who have suffered even greater persecution and devastation under ISIS.            *Top
