-Supreme Court Rejects Washington Pharmacists’ Religious Liberty Suit

by Dr. D ~ June 29th, 2016

The current makeup of the US Supreme Court, following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, now puts American religious liberty in jeopardy. The court voted not to hear an appeal of a Washington State law that forces pharmacists to dispense abortifacients regardless of religious conscience and convictions. Here’s the story from the Christian Post:

The U.S. Supreme Court denied a hearing for pharmacists appealing a Washington State law mandating that they provide abortion-inducing drugs despite their religious objections.

A majority of the eight-member high court decided Tuesday morning to not hear an appeal in Stormans v. Wiesman, allowing a ruling from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to stand.

While the decision to reject a hearing for the Stormans case was given without comment, Justice Samuel Alito authored a dissent to the decision.

Joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Clarence Thomas, Alito wrote that allowing the Washington State law to stand was "an ominous sign" for the future of religious freedom.

Response: Nearly on every turn religious liberty is now being trumped and superseded by progressive PC issues. In this case it is abortion. Pharmacists in the state of Washington are now going to be forced to dispense abortifacients or lose their jobs, profession, and even face government reprisals. Three justices believed that this was an intrusion on the First Amendment, the other five disagreed.

If this is any indication of how future religious liberty cases may be decided then A significant part of the Amendment has been thrown out while the Church and State ‘freedom from religion’ understanding remains which in affect turns the original understanding the the First Amendment upside down and in side out. Now it is all about taking religion out of America instead of preserving religious liberty. Like the three justices joined in dissent said:

"an ominous sign" for the future of religious freedom.

Here’s an even stronger take on the decision by David French:

"… the fact that the Stormans refuse to sell abortifacients didn’t cause a single person to lose access to the drug of their choice," wrote French.

"But to anti-Christian bigots, it is intolerable that Christian professionals exist unless they bow the knee to the Baal of the sexual revolution, so Washington’s governor took action — demanding that the Washington State Board of Pharmacy issue regulations that required pharmacists to issue abortifacients regardless of religious or moral objections.”
