-Church Sign Bigotry? Or Political Correctness Run Amok?

by Dr. D ~ May 18th, 2016

Belmont Drive Missionary Baptist Church

Baptist Church · Hood River, OR

The pastor of a church in Hood River, Oregon has become the center of a controversy that has gone viral. He is being accused of bigotry because of two messages he put on his  church sign. Here’s the story from Jihad Watch:

The pastor of an Oregon Baptist church is under fire locally for putting what critics call a bigoted message on his church’s sign board, KATU reports.

Pastor Michael Harrington placed the words on the reader board outside Belmont Drive Missionary Baptist Church. On one side it reads,

“Wake up Christians, Allah is not our God,

Muhammad not greater than Jesus.”

On the other side, it says,

“Only the Bible is God’s word, ‘holy book,’ Koran is just another book.”

“I’m not politically correct. I’ve never been politically correct, but I think I’m biblically correct, and that’s what matters to me,” Harrington told KATU.

It isn’t against any particular denomination. It’s just the fact that I have taught and will continue to teach that I have one God, one way of salvation and one Bible that’s holy.

But locals, including the mayor, don’t want to see the signs.

Response: The pastor is only affirming what Christians have traditionally believed and most still believe- Jesus is the name above all names and the only truly inspired holy book of God is the Bible and he is questioning whether Muslims worship the same God. Something that many Christian theologians have dealt with lately.

My only quibble with his message is that ‘Allah’ is not only the Muslim name for their God but the generic name for God in Arabic that preceded Islam and even Christians use it in the Middle East.

Nevertheless, are we really at the point in America where Christians affirming their beliefs is now considered to be ‘bigotry’? Meanwhile the very prayers that Muslims say every day and broadcast from their mosques are a direct putdown of Christian beliefs but that is OK since it is in Arabic and Muslims need to be protected from Islamophobia? It is also now acceptable for atheists to put up billboard signs and messages putting down God and Christianity. No charges of  ‘bigotry’ are ever claimed in those cases.

What do you think? Is this really bigotry or Political Correctness run amok?

So ‘locals’ including the mayor and the press don’t want to see signs like this? Just 15 years ago this church sign would have bothered no one and any Muslims driving by, if there were any in Hood river, would have ignored it. But after 9/11/01 we are now supposed to be more sensitive to the ‘Religion of Peace.’

One would think that Christians must have perpetrated that terrorist event and are doing penance since now we are suppose to be silent and more respectful of Islam according to current cultural PC dictums. I find it all rather ironic.               *Top
