-Atheist Lawsuit Against Giant Cross on Church Property?

by Dr. D ~ March 17th, 2016

Corpus Christi Cross

When atheists and atheist  organizations bring lawsuits against crosses they are usually on public land. In most of those cases the plaintiffs complain that crosses should not be allowed on government property but only on private or church land. But in this case an atheist has brought a lawsuit against a cross being built on church property through private donations. Here’s the story from Fox News:

Lifelong atheist Patrick Greene has a huge problem with a giant cross under construction alongside Interstate 37 in Corpus Christi, Texas – a city whose name literally means “Body of Christ.”  …

The 230-foot tall cross is being erected on property owned by Abundant Life Fellowship –  paid for by donations. Pastor Rick Milby said it will be the largest cross in the western hemisphere. …

Mr. Greene said the cross is a safety hazard and said it should not be seen from the highway.  …

So the San Antonio atheist filed a lawsuit. But Mr. Greene did not file a lawsuit because he believes the cross is tacky. Nor did he file a lawsuit because of potential safety hazards. He filed a lawsuit because the mayor and other city leaders attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the cross.

Response: We have always contended that the lawsuits against crosses on public land were just the beginning and eventually we would see suits against crosses even on private land. This case is really not the first. Lately all across America atheists have used zoning and local sign laws to restrict crosses even on private or church property.

Obviously in this case the church has received all of the necessary government ok’s to build the cross. So the lawsuit is against the mayor and others for attending the ground braking? It is going to be a famous local attraction after it is built so official attendance is warranted. Fact is I have been to many new church dedications where local officials have been in attendance in their official capacity. It is something that local officials have always done from time memorial.

Make no mistake about this, many atheists would like to eventually eliminate any trace of Christianity that can be seen or observed even on private land. This will not be the last but is just the beginning. With obvious changes in store for SCOTUS this year or next, who knows how some of these suits will be adjudicated in the future.

I believe you hit a nail on the head in your post:

“Obviously in this case the church has received all of the necessary government ok’s to build the cross. ”

What is, eventually, going to be the attack strategy of the left will be to use required governmental approval to attack any church-related construction. The fact that the government “OK”ed a cross will, in and of itself, be argued as an unconstitutional involvement of government with religion, leaving no acceptable route for a church to proceed to get a building permit (or permit to do much of anything else).

[…] attacks upon crosses are going to an entirely new level. The new trend is to challenge crosses even on private land and on property owned by religious organizations. Increasingly zoning and city ‘sign’ policies are being used as an excuse to limit their […]
