Here’s a scary story coming out of Kansas. A family’s numerous trips to a gardening store to get supplies for their home garden and tea leaves in their trash marked them out to police observers as possible marijuana growers and culminated in a search warrant and a raid of their family home by the local swat team. From Townhall:

When Robert Harte answered, SWAT agents flooded the home. He was told to lie on the floor. When Addie Harte came out to see what was going on, she saw her husband on his stomach as SWAT cop stood over him with a gun. The family was then held at gunpoint for more than two hours while the police searched their home. Though they claimed to be looking for evidence of a major marijuana growing operation, they later stated that they knew within about 20 minutes that they wouldn’t find any such operation. So they switched to search for evidence of “personal use.” They found no evidence of any criminal activity.

Response: Scary police raids on families are happening far more often than they used to. Similar police attacks like this have even been politically motivated or in some cases perpetrated against Christian families in the last couple of years.

In this case, merely growing a home garden gets a family flagged. Next, police might be spying on gun store patrons or taking down the license plates of possible extremist ‘bigots’ attending conservative Christian churches?

When the Constitution is challenged in one area and the Bill of Rights questioned by some (like the First and Second Amendments lately) then all of our rights in reality are lessened in the process.  The Bill of Rights is in place to protect citizens from these type of police excesses and governmental abuses.

In this case, a federal judge also threw out a lawsuit by the Harte family against the police. So no redress or consequences are in store for the police administrators or judge who allowed this outrage to happen. This kind of  ‘no harm no foul’ result will encourage similar autocratic over reactions in the future. Scary!               *Top
