Muslim parents are unhappy with the Jersey City School board for voting down an official school holiday for the Muslim holy day-  Eid al-Adha. The discussion became so heated at the school board meeting that security was called in to take control.

The board noted that children could take the day off without penalty for religious reasons. Also that the Jewish high holy days- Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, were also not official school holidays.

From the Blaze:

The Jersey City Board of Education voted last week not to close schools for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, one of the most important holidays for Muslims.

School board members in New Jersey made their decision Thursday despite appeals from Muslim attendees who showed up to advocate that the board change the school schedule.

At one point, things became so heated that an official urged security to “take charge” of the situation.

Response: Accommodations are already in place for Muslim children to take religious holidays off without penalty and that should be enough. If Eid were to become an official school holiday than the majority of parents who are not Muslim would be forced to take the day off from work or make arrangements for the care of their children for that day.

As the number of Muslims increase in the US look for more problems accommodating their culture and religion. We have freedom of religion in this country and every Muslim should be free to practice their religion as much as possible. But the Muslim religion not only asks for their adherents to conform to their teachings but also expects and demands any host culture to make changes to accommodate and respect their faith and practices. In places where there is a large Muslim minority heated conflicts like this will be common in the future.

In neighborhoods where Muslims become the majority (like in Dearborn, Michigan), look for loud speakers to carry the daily call to prayers from the local Mosques. This is already becoming an issue in some places in America.              *Top
