A guy cuts off his own arm and one women lives her life in a wheel chair even though she doesn’t need to. Many would call those folks ‘crazy’ but they are members of a new group of people identified as ‘Transabled.’ Others call it BIID-body integrity identity disorder. These are individuals who see themselves as disabled even though their bodies may be perfectly healthy. Here’s the story from Canada’s National Post:

“We define transability as the desire or the need for a person identified as able-bodied by other people to transform his or her body to obtain a physical impairment,” says Alexandre Baril, a Quebec born academic who will present on “transability” at this week’s Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Ottawa.

“The person could want to become deaf, blind, amputee, paraplegic. It’s a really, really strong desire.”

Researchers in Canada are trying to better understand how transabled people think and feel. …

Most crave an amputation or paralysis, though he has interviewed one person who wants his penis removed. Another wants to be blind.  …

Some of his study participants do draw parallels to the experience many transgender people express of not feeling like they’re in the right body. Baldwin says this disorder is starting to be thought of as a neurological problem with the body’s mapping, rather than a mental illness.

Response: Many of these folks are intelligent and live somewhat normal lives according to the Biid.org website.  Fortunately only a tiny group of people have been identified with this disorder. Nevertheless, according to the NP article there is now an attempt to identify this as something other than a mental illness.

I believe that the reason this small group is even being identified and named is because of the obvious parallels to transgender folk who also view themselves as really something different than what their physical bodies may indicate.

Should folks suffering from this have the right to have themselves maimed or altered physically to square with their own self identity? Obviously they should not be discriminated against but are they candidates for any kind of ‘special civil rights’? We are well along the path towards giving special rights to transgender people who have very similar feelings. In fact in California, state prisoners can have their transgender surgery and physical adaptations paid for entirely by the state.

Apparently, doctors in the UK  have actually amputated healthy limbs in the past to ‘help’ some of those suffering from this disorder. Should doctors actually maim or blind folks who want real physical disabilities? I don’t think so, what do you think?             *Top
