-The Tale of Two Soldiers: How the American Military Has Changed When it Comes to Religion

(WWII  US Army Air Force Bible)

Nothing demonstrates how the American military culture has changed over the years when it comes to religion like the tale of two different soldiers that I found on the Internet yesterday.

The first story is about an American airmen in WWII who lost his prayer book while on a mission flying over Germany. It must have fallen out of his pocket since he had it with him on the plane but was recovered on the ground thousands of feet down.  After 70 years it finally made its way back to its grateful owner. A heart rendering story for Memorial Day.

The second story is about a modern member of the US Marine Corp. who was court-martialed for refusing to take down a scripture– “No weapon formed against me shall prosper” -which was on her desk computer.  An incredible story that should have never happened. Fortunately, her case has been appealed and she is now represented by the Liberty Institute which has a former US Solicitor General handling it.

The contrast between the two stories is telling. In WWII soldiers were issued prayer books and Bibles along with their uniforms and they openly used them. When I was a kid growing up in the 50’s my Dad gave me his army issued New Testament/Psalms that he had carried with him at all times during the war. Now a Marine can be court-martialed and dishonorably dismissed for displaying a altered Bible quote on her computer for her own encouragement? I have also read several stories recently where soldiers and even officers have been ordered to remove Bibles from their desks.

The American military continues to fight and even make the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and yet no longer have religious liberty themselves? That seems to be the clear message being given to members of our American military under the guidance of the current administration.            *Top
