-Mosul: Then There Were Nun

A Lack of Response in the West to ‘Religious Genocide’
(Nun: Arabic letter and Muslim Symbol for Christians)
Shortly after ISIS took over in Mosul every Christian home, business, institution, and church were marked and spray painted with the letter ‘Nun’ which is the Muslim symbol for ‘Nasara‘ (Nazarenes) the historical Muslim name for Christians. Then there were Nun everywhere and now there are none- no Christians left.
The Christian community in Mosul, Iraq and the surrounding area of Nineveh had existed for nearly 2,000 years and many of their churches even predated the founding of Islam. Just a few short years ago there were over a 100,000 in the community but now there are none.
Last week the Islamic State authorities in Mosul proclaimed that all Christians must convert, leave, or die. There is no accounting for how many lost their lives but we do know that their churches have been destroyed and all of their homes, vehicles, and possessions have been confiscated and those who did leave and refused to convert to Islam were turned out with nothing but the clothes on their backs and left to walk hundreds of miles in the desert.
We are now witnessing an on-going genocide that is reminiscent of the Turkish treatment and slaughter of Armenian Christians during WWI. But what is really shocking is the silence in the West. There seems to be little or no response from the Obama administration, the Western media, or any other authorities in the West to the on-going ‘religious genocide’ being perpetrated by the Islamic State (ISIS) on Christians. Why?
Meanwhile there are major marches and demonstrations in Europe and America supporting the Palestinians who are indeed suffering but their radical leaders could put a stop to the killing any time by discontinuing their missile launches on Israel.
Where are the marches and demonstrations for peaceful unarmed families forced to walk into the desert with nothing. And where are the demonstrations and protests for the destruction of a culture along with historical churches, tombs, and artifacts of a people that have been around for nearly 2,000 years? There is none because the Western press for what ever reason has substantially ignored the story and the 10 o’clock TV news continues to talk about the weather while a real genocide against Christians is in progress.
Here’s a plea from Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III Younan, leader and overseer of Assyrian Christians (Syriac Catholic Church):
“We are so saddened that the civilized world doesn’t really care. Surely there are other dramatic problems — wars around us in the Middle East… Gaza or Syria but here it’s … genocide … just because they are Christians.” …
(He said that, for the first time in nearly two thousand years, the city will be devoid of Christians and pleaded with the audience to speak out about the mass atrocities coming out of the region.)
“We have to stand up for the cause of the Lord Jesus who is the prince of peace of love,” Younan said. …
“I think that the legacy of the U.S. is to always be the defender of liberty and all minorities,” he added. “Those who have the responsibility to lead this great nation, they have to think seriously about what to do to defend the defenseless and marginalized.”
What can folks in America do to help? First of all spread the word, contact your congressional representatives, bombard the White House website, and send contributions to humanitarian organizations providing aid to the Christian refugees. Also contact the news organizations and demand coverage, write letters to the editor in the local newspaper, and let your friends on Facebook and the social media know what is going on unnoticed. Above all, pray. *Top
