Members of a Southern Baptist church in La Mirada, California have voted to change their congregation’s official stance on homosexuality after hearing teaching on ‘both sides.’ In the process they chose to reject their denomination’s traditional Biblical teaching on the issue. It remains to be seen whether they will be allowed to remain affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.

The process started when the pastor declared that he had a change of mind over the issue following the coming out of his son as gay in February. Here’s the story from The Blaze:

…after exploring the issue and holding a vote, parishioners at New Heart Community Church in La Mirada, California, decided not only to keep Pastor Danny Cortez, but to also change the house of worship’s official stance on homosexuality, according to the Huffington Post.

Cortez shocked the church with news that he no longer agreed with its conservative stance on homosexuality apparently after his son, Drew, posted a video to YouTube about his sexuality in February.

Response: This is just the beginning. A month ago I predicted that in the near future we would begin to see conservative evangelical churches under cultural pressure choosing to accept a progressive view of homosexuality and same-sex marriage while rejecting the clear Biblical teaching on the matter. It makes sense that it is in California but it is still rather shocking that this is happening in a Southern Baptist affiliated church. I really did expect most of the movement away from Biblical teaching to begin with non-denominational evangelical congregations which are dominated by a head pastor with less complicated organizational structure and polity.

Nevertheless, this will not be the last and every defection will be covered and slanted as a celebratory occasion by the American main stream media.

Notice towards the end of the article linked above there is report which seems to indicate that the SBC Ethics Religious Liberty Commission was considering a change in the denomination’s approach towards homosexuality. The truth of the matter is the leadership conference was looking for ways to better reach out and minister to LGBT folks rather than continue to push them away from the church. There was no consideration about changing the church’s Biblical teaching. Another case where the media slants the message and gets it wrong.              *Top
