-HGTV Cancels Show Over the Christian Views of Hosts

HGTV has cancelled a new show because the hosts held Christian views about homosexuality, abortion, and Islam.

Here’s the story from the Baptist Press:

The Home & Garden Television network has cancelled an upcoming reality show, and the program’s stars believe the move came in response to a firestorm of controversy surrounding their traditional Christian views on abortion and gay marriage.

HGVT had slated for its fall lineup a show called "Flip It Forward," starring twin brothers David and Jason Benham. Each episode was to feature the brothers finding a "fixer-upper" house and remodeling it for a family with limited financial resources.

But following a report by the liberal website RightWingWatch.org that quoted one of the Benhams as opposing gay marriage and abortion and saying Christianity is superior to Islam, HGTV tweeted on May 7, "HGTV has decided not to move forward with the Benham Brothers’ series."

The brothers told CNN they believe HGTV was pressured into its decision.

Response: It is amazing and scary how quickly traditional Christian views on homosexuality in particular have become so controversial that they are now a professional liability and disqualifier. Then add to that traditional Christian views on abortion and Islam and the controversy is intensified.

Meanwhile, the Benham brothers wrote in a statement that they would choose their faith over a television show if that was the choice and claimed to reach out to all people in love:

As Christians we are called to love our fellow man. Anyone who suggests that we hate homosexuals or people of other faiths is either misinformed or lying.
…and we do not, nor will we ever discriminate against people who do not share our views."

Truthfully the only real discrimination going on in this case is against two Christians. One of the major misconceptions about conservative Christians is that since they oppose same-sex marriage and call homosexuality a sin then they must hate gays. Nothing could be further from the truth. Christians are called to reach out in love to all regardless of their sexual preferences or any opposing beliefs or views. The statements made by the Benham brothers demonstrate that this is also their understanding of basic Christian teaching and principles.           *Top
