-Air Force Academy Scripture Removal Results in Policy Confusion

( U.S. Air Force Academy: Wikipedia)

One of the unintended consequences of the recent controversy over the removal of a Bible verse from a cadet’s personal message board is confusion.

Both the cadets and academy officials seem confused over the current official policy when it comes to religious freedom and free speech in the military and at the academy in particular. Here’s the story from OneNewsNow:

After speaking with cadets and officials at the U.S. Air Force Academy, an attorney with Liberty Institute says new details surrounding what appeared to be an act of religious hostility may actually reflect confusion about the campus policy on religious speech. …

…Mike Berry, director of military affairs for Liberty Institute, … spoke with a number of cadets and the top judge advocate general (JAG) at the Academy on Thursday. "Contrary to what Weinstein said, the cadet removed it voluntarily after some of his fellow cadets discussed with him whether or not it was appropriate to have it there," the attorney explains. "So because of this incident now there is – in their words – ‘mass confusion amongst the cadets.’ They no longer know what the policy is."

The Liberty Institute spokesman admits being disturbed by the fact that the Air Force doesn’t equate the free exercise of religion with religious speech; but that religious speech, spoken or written, can be controlled.

Response: This was obviously a situation that was blown out of proportion and instigated by Mikey Weinstein and his associates. Reading his obvious anti-Christian rant gives one a real handle on who actually had ulterior motives in publicizing and exacerbating the situation:

“It clearly elevated one religious faith over all others at an already virulently hyper-fundamentalist Christian institution. It massively poured fundamentalist Christian gasoline on an already raging out-of-control conflagration of fundamentalist Christian tyranny, exceptionalism and supremacy at [the academy].”

Meanwhile, the academy officials and the cadets seem confused over religious freedom and free speech in the military and at the academy. If properly resolved it could be a positive teaching moment for everyone involved. Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michelle D. Johnson seems committed to a positive rather than  punitive resolution and hopefully the Constitutional rights of those in the military will be supported and religious free speech will come out on top after the dust settles.

Also, it should be obvious that Mikey Weinstein has ‘cried wolf’ once too many times and hopefully his influence in the military will diminish following this contrived and exaggerated event.             *Top
