-Oscars: McConaughey Really Thanks God

by Dr. D ~ March 3rd, 2014

Last night at the Oscars Matthew McConaughey won the award for best actor for his unique performance in “Dallas Buyers Club.” Even more unique was his acceptance speech where he made a point of thanking God for putting him in that position in the first place:

“First off, I want to thank God, because that’s who I look up to. He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or of any other human hand. He has shown me that … it’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late Charlie Laughton who said, ‘When you’ve got God you’ve got a friend — and that friend is you.’”

Watch the whole speech above. He also went on the express how important his family was to his life and success.

Response: The whole thing caught me by surprise since his ‘thank God’ was not a perfunctory throw away line but a heart felt acknowledgement.

For years the Oscars had become famous for controversial comments and political statements but recently the rulers of ‘the academy’ have gone out of their way to eliminate or play music over them. This is as close as it got to ‘controversial’ last night. You could have heard a pin drop in the auditorium when he seriously mentioned God and the lack of response was telling.

I saw the movie on cable a couple of weeks ago during ‘movie night’ with my wife (her choice) and found it rather depressing but McConaughey’s performance was impressive. The character he played brought on a number of different strong emotional responses including revulsion, pity, and surprisingly some respect. It is not a film I would watch again or recommend seeing but I surely do respect Matthew McConaughey’s performance. Even more so after his comments last night at the Oscars.               *Top
