Facebook vs. the Bible: Which do Americans Turn to the most? Anyone following our current culture in anyway could easily answer that question. But what are the implications that can be drawn from it?
Nevertheless a writer from the Associated Press crunches a few numbers for us and seems to be implying that Facebook is more influential in American culture than the Bible. Here’s the story from the AP:
Facebook’s numbers are epic. More Americans check Facebook daily than read the Bible and it has more monthly users worldwide than most continents have people.
Facebook, which celebrates its 10th anniversary Tuesday, says worldwide it has 757 million daily active users. Of those 19 percent are in the U.S. and Canada, so that’s more than 143 million people checking Facebook daily.
The Bible used to be the go-to for statistics about reading, pre-digital age. A 2006 CBS News poll found 15 percent of U.S. adults read the Bible or other religious texts daily. There are about 267 million adults in the U.S. and Canada. That means about 40 million people reading the Bible daily.
Response: This is really a bogus apples vs. oranges story. A few years ago one could have said the same thing about MySpace and newspapers. One could still make that claim when it comes to radio or TV. The AP writer crunches the numbers and seems to be implying something without ever really saying anything at all accept that lots of folks are using Facebook and it is the 10th anniversary of that site.
Fact is more Americans eat breakfast than read the Bible also but so what? Probably more drink coffee or soft drinks everyday but the statistics would be rather meaningless when it come to reading the Bible.
Folks have been reading the Bible for 2,000 years or so and even more when it comes to the Older Hebrew scriptures (OT). If you really want to compare the two in a more meaningful way just ask Americans which one they would choose if they had to give up one- Facebook or the Bible? Now that would give us some interesting cultural statistics.
Fact is, every day I look on my Facebook page there are at least one or more Bible verses quoted by my friends. So any given day that I turn to Facebook I also end up reading from the Bible at least one or more times. So even when I go onto Facebook the Bible still rules. *Top
