-Libya: Christians Afraid of Coming Sharia Law

The United States and NATO countries helped the Libyan rebels get rid of Muammar Gaddafi for a supposed cause of freedom and democracy. Now they are using their newly found freedoms to establish a radical Islamic country based solely upon Sharia law and the Christians in Libya are rightfully afraid of what that might mean for their future.

Here’s the story from Fox News:

Libya’s recent edict that its coming constitution will be based on Shariah law has sent a chill through the North African nation’s small Christian community.

Libya’s Coptic Christians, who number about 300,000, or 5 percent of the population, were allowed to practice their faith under dictator Muammar Qaddafi. But since the strongman was ousted from power, and ultimately killed, Muslim fundamentalists have increasingly filled the power void. Last month, the national assembly voted in favor of making Koranic law, or Shariah, the basis of all legislative decisions, meaning Islam will shape all future banking, criminal and financial cases

Response: During the war to oust Gaddafi we wrote about our concerns that the rebel leadership was dominated by Islamic militants including some with ties to al Qaeda. We warned at the time that the civil war was not really about freedom like so many articles in the Western press indicated since we had numerous quotes from rebel leaders that their goal was to establish an Islamic nation under Sharia law.

Now that sharia is becoming a reality the Libyan Christians are rightfully concerned about their future place in that nation since under strict forms of Sharia Christians are second citizens with lessor rights and freedoms than Muslims. Already some Christian leaders have been jailed for supposedly proselytizing and others are claiming a rise in persecution since the end of the civil war. The 300,000 or so Christians are now afraid of what the future might bring them as the country changes all of their laws to conform with a strict compliance to Sharia.

Where is the Obama administration in response to this development? Either the billions we spent supporting the rebels have not bought us any kind of influence or the present administration doesn’t really care if another country becomes a radical Islamist nation. Or maybe both? Obviously all the USA has received for our help is lots of pain from the radical attack upon our consulate in Benghazi which nobody in this administration wants to talk about.             *Top
