The al Qaeda flag is now flying over two major cities in western Iraq.

It has been two years since President Obama declared ‘victory’ in Iraq and took our forces out of the country. The American media has substantially ignored the news coming out of there ever since. We have carried some updates when Christians were involved but have passed over the continuing battles and ‘civil war’ going on in that fractured country.

However here is the latest and it is too crazy to ignore.  Over the weekend al Qaeda linked militants captured the City of Fallujah and Ramadi the nearby provincial capital raising their black flags over both cities. Here is the story from Fox News:

After fighting in a bloody three-day war, Al Qaeda-affiliated militants captured the western city of Fallujah, and raised its flag over government buildings in the city previously secured by U.S. forces before withdrawing from the country two years later. …

Fallujah, along with nearby provincial capital Ramadi, was a stronghold of Sunni insurgents during the U.S.-led war in Iraq. Al Qaeda militants largely took both cities over last week and have been fending off incursions by government forces there since. …

The overrunning of Fallujah and Ramadi, another Sunni stronghold, by Al Qaeda’s Iraqi branch in the Sunni heartland of western Anbar provinces is a blow to the Shiite-led government of Prime Minister al-Malik. His government has been struggling to contain discontent among the Sunni minority over Shiite political domination that has flared into increased violence for the past year.

Response: While we had troops in Iraq the American media continually did all sorts of contortions trying to disprove and downplay the presence of al Qaeda in that country. Quite similar to their current protests that the attack in Benghazi was merely the product of an American video that no one in Libya really ever saw. The company line from the Obama administration is that al Qaeda has been eliminated as an effective force and threat since the death of  bin Laden. But with the capture of two major cities in Western Iraq it is now impossible to ignore the continuing threat of this diverse terrorist organization.

Meanwhile the most important story coming out of Iraq for the purposes of this website is the continuing and recent persecution of Christians in that country. When the American forces went into Iraq in 2003 there was over a million Christians living in peace in Iraq and now there are only a couple hundred thousand or so left living in constant fear. During this Christmas season the Christians remaining in Iraq were afraid to outwardly celebrate Christmas and their fears were realized with several bombings that killed 34 Christians on Christmas Day.

This leaves us with the question of whether it was really worth all of the deaths and  consequences taking out Saddam Hussein. Or maybe President Obama was far too quick in removing American forces in face of all of the unrest and civil war that has followed in that country ever since. Meanwhile the Shiite Iraqi government of PM Nouri al-Maliki continues to get closer to Iran and further away from American influence.            *Top
