-US Catholic Bishops Reaffirm Their Opposition to the HHS Contraceptive Mandate

The Conference of US Catholic Bishops reaffirmed their opposition to the Obama administration’s HHS Contraceptive Mandate. Here’s the story from the National Catholic Reporter:

The U.S. bishops on Wednesday reaffirmed their opposition to a federal mandate requiring coverage of contraceptive services in healthcare plans, alleging that “the government is refusing to uphold its obligation to respect the rights of religious believers.”

… the bishops “stand united in our resolve to resist this heavy burden,” … “We will continue our efforts in Congress and especially with the promising initiatives in the courts to protect the religious freedom that ensures our ability to fulfill the Gospel by serving the common good,” said the statement, which was issued late Wednesday afternoon.

The bishops have been meeting in Baltimore for their annual plenary assembly since Monday. …

Response: It is good to see that the US Bishops are still committed on this issue. With the election of a new President over the Conference -Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, some were speculating that the Bishops would back away somewhat from their confrontation with the Obama administration over the HHS Mandate since many considered it to be the signature issue of the outgoing president- Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York.

Nevertheless, since the vote was unanimous it underlines their real commitment to continue the battle on this issue for religious freedom in America.            *Top
