A new bill which would allow non-physicians to perform abortions in California has already passed the state Senate and is headed back for final approval in the Assembly. From the local CBS affiliate:

SACRAMENTO (AP) — Nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives and physician assistants could perform a type of early abortion under a bill approved Monday by the state Senate, leaving the measure one step from the governor.

The measure by Assemblywoman Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, would let those medical professionals perform what are known as aspiration abortions during the first trimester. The method involves inserting a tube and using suction to terminate a pregnancy.

The Senate approved AB154 on a mostly party-line, 25-11 vote, sending it back to the Assembly for a final vote on amendments.

Response: There is a shortage of doctors in California who want to be involved in abortions so this is the ‘progressive’ answer to the problem?

A major excuse for making abortion legal in California in the first place was so that women could receive the best medical care from trained doctors. Now abortions are going to be performed again by nurses, midwives, and PA’s just like they used to be long time ago before it became legal? Real progress?

The real progress is the fact that more and more doctors and health care workers no longer want to be involved or connected with abortion in the first place.            *Top
