The story went viral and then on Friday Florida Atlantic University claimed that no student was in trouble for refusing a professor’s order to stomp on a paper with the name of ’JESUS’ on it during a class.

Now it comes to light that the official university statement was wrong. A “Notice of Charges” has been filed against Ryan Rotela contrary to the statement released by the university on Friday. Todd Starnes of Fox News has the story:

according to a letter written by Associate Dean Rozalia Williams, Rotela is facing a litany of charges – including an alleged violation of the student code of conduct, acts of verbal, written or physical abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, coercion or other conduct which threaten the health, safety or welfare of any person.”

“In the interim, you may not attend class or contact any of the students involved in this matter – verbally or electronically – or by any other means,” Williams wrote to Rotela. “Please be advised that a Student Affairs hold may be placed on your records until final disposition of the complaint.”

Response: This story continues an on-going discussion on this blog about how Christianity and believers are now being assailed at many college and universities across America. The higher education environment in America is decidedly secular and increasingly anti-Christian.

In this case, the student- Rotela complained to the professor and university officials concerning an offensive exercise during a class but it is the student who is now in trouble. Now for the sake of his college career at the school he is effectively being told to shut up about it?

The order to stomp on ‘JESUS’ would be offensive any time of the year but particularly during the run up to Easter. The exercise was supposed to demonstrate the importance of symbols in culture and most students were supposed to be hesitant about stomping on the paper but in this case only one student seemed to be bothered and offended enough to object.

Meanwhile the university officials seemed to want to mislead and issue false statements to cover up the whole affair.  They seemed to be puzzled and threatened by all of the negative reactions and now they are trying to blame all of it on the student while the professor gets a pass? If they truly want to experience ‘real’ threats and harassment, next time they should change the name to ‘Muhammad” or ‘Allah’ and see what happens. I promise the response would be taken to an entirely different level.            *Top

Many of the universities and colleges that have been the focus of anti-Christian activity of late have been private schools. Many others have been schools where at least arguably (very arguably) the school is trying to enforce anti-discrimination policies.

But here, it is a public institution, funded by taxpayer dollars, which is penalizing and harassing a Christian student for his beliefs, with no pretense of any “anti-discrimination” goals behind the harassment. At least in theory, a publicly funded organization is supposed to be available to all citizens without regard to race, gender, ethnicity, or religion (except of course, if the religion happens to be Christianity).

By the way, the student involved at Florida Atlantic, Ryan Rotela, is Mormon.

I’m amazed at how easy it is to attack a Christian due to their charitable, turn the other cheek beliefs. And instead of honoring or praising a person for standing up for their beliefs and not getting in the way of anyone that believes differently (A traditional American Value) they are vilified by the academia (values more akin to Stalin, Hitler, and almost any Muslim leader)

It’s time to start purging the intolerance from our schools and our government.
