-Homosexuality Used to be a ‘Mental Disorder’ Now Those Who Oppose It Are Crazy?

The American Psychiatric Association used to define homosexuality as a ‘mental disorder’ but today the tables have been turned and those who morally oppose it are called ‘homophobes’ and their behavior is considered to be an unhealthy obsession? Here’s an article by Brendan O’Neill addressing this issue in The Telegraph (UK):

…  A few years ago, the author Martin Kantor openly described homophobia as an "emotional disorder", and possibly a "mental illness", which differentiates haters of gays from what Kantor calls "normals" – that is, people who tolerate gays. Homophobia has recently been put under the microscope by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, which is published by the American Psychological Association. Until 1973, another association – the American Psychiatric Association – defined homosexuality as a mental disorder; but today it seems that criticism of gays has replaced gayness itself as the pet obsession of those determined to pathologise human views and behaviour.

Response: This seems to go right along with some secularist claims that people of faith actually suffer from mental illness. It is interesting how the tables have turned. A generation ago non-believers and atheists were the ‘abnormal’ ones now the trend is going the other direction.

To be fair, the author of the article above considers both perspectives to be somewhat missing the mark and engaging in name calling rather than seriously considering the opposition. Nevertheless it is now Biblical Christians who are on the defensive.

Just this week President Obama called on the US Supreme Court to reject California’s Proposition 8 that limited marriage to one man and one woman calling it ‘unconstitutional.’ In 2008 when running for the presidency the first time around Obama supported traditional marriage but less than 5 years later he is a die-hard advocate for same-sex marriage? Then a couple of days ago former President Clinton came out against DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) a measure he supported and signed into law. Now he too wants the Supremes to knock traditional marriage down.

Change is happening so quickly in the American culture that it is hard to keep up with it all. What used to be called good and moral is now considered to be a bigoted phobia? What is next?

Will freedom of religion be ‘redefined’ as no longer applying to Conservative Christians in the future? Sounds ridiculous but one can no longer assume that our Constitutional rights will be preserved in a drastically changing moral environment. The time could come when Biblical views are considered to be so offensive and ‘immoral’ that they are no longer considered to be ‘religious’ and protected but designated for total elimination for the ‘greater good’ of society. Sounds unlikely now but so did the legalization of same–sex marriage just 10 years ago.             *Top
