According to a survey by LifeWay Research, Protestant pastors are overwhelmingly supporting Gov. Romney for President in spite of his Mormon faith.

From the Baptist Press:

NASHVILLE (BP) — Three times more Protestant pastors plan to vote for Mitt Romney over Barack Obama in the upcoming presidential election, and Romney’s Mormon beliefs are a factor for only a small number of pastors, according to a new survey.

The survey conducted by LifeWay Research Sept. 26-Oct. 3 found that 57 percent of Protestant pastors plan to vote for Romney compared with 17 percent for Obama. Twenty-two percent are still undecided.

Response: This is a surprise and a real turn around for some. During the primary season there were a number of rather vocal evangelical pastors who were pushing voters to support any Republican candidate except Romney because of his Mormon faith.

This does not mean that the pastors are now comfortable with Romney’s Mormon faith. 82% just found reasons to support Gov. Romney or not in spite of his Mormonism. A survey last year also by LifeWay showed that the vast majority of pastors (75%) do not consider Mormons to be Christians and it is doubtful that this election has changed that opinion in any way.

What has changed is that Mitt Romney is now the official GOP candidate and the only real hope to unseat President Obama. While Obama is a professing Christian his policies reflect a decidedly secular world view that is contrary to the Christian/Biblical world view of most pastors. On the other hand, Gov. Romney’s Mormon faith may be heretical but his values and views are far more compatible to those held by most Protestant pastors and most evangelical Christians.             *Top
