-California: Now All Counseling of Teens Must be Supportive of Homosexuality?

  ( Gov. Jerry Brown: Wikipedia)

On Sunday (September 30), California Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law a controversial ban on counseling and therapy for youth that is not affirming of same-sex attraction. It is now illegal in California for counselors in the state to provide therapy to a minor that might want help in changing their sexual orientation. According to the new law:

Under no circumstances shall a mental health provider engage in sexual orientation change efforts with a patient under 18 years of age.

The following are a few poignant responses that I have found to the new California law:

From David Pickup, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Los Angeles:

“What am I supposed to tell a kid who’s crying in my office that says he’s been sexually abused before in his life and he wants help to resolve those causes of homosexuality?” Pickup said. “I have to tell him, ‘No, sorry, I can’t help you.’ ”

From Brad Dacus, Pacific Justice Institute:

“Of all the freedom-killing bills we have seen in our legislature the last several years, this is among the worst. This outrageous bill makes no exceptions for young victims of sexual abuse who are plagued with unwanted same-sex attraction, nor does it respect the consciences of mental health professionals who work in a church. We are filing suit to defend families, children, and religious freedom. This unprecedented bill is outrageously unconstitutional.”

From Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel:

"The California governor and legislature are putting their own preconceived notions and political ideology ahead of children and their rights to get access to counseling that meets their needs. A number of minors who have struggled with same-sex attraction have been able to reduce or eliminate the stress and conflicts in their lives by receiving counseling of their choice which best meets their needs and religious convictions. This bill will harm children, stress families, and place counselors in a catch-22, because they will be forced to violate their licensing ethical codes."

Here’s a link to a Christian article on CP that contains an alternate view on this law.

Pacific Justice institute and Liberty Counsel plan on challenging this new law in the courts. Brad Dacus of PJI hopes to get an injunction in place before the law is activated in January.

Response: This is another case where the push for ‘special rights’ for homosexuality has over-ridden common sense and the Constitutional rights and freedoms of others- particularly Christians.

I have been following this legislation for several months now and have been getting updates on its progress directly from the Pacific Justice Institute. Over the last several months, thousands of Christians here in California have contacted their representatives in Sacramento along with Gov. Brown to no avail.

Once it reached Brown’s desk I considered it lost since he receives most of his support from the Bay Area (San Francisco). Case in point, when he was the State AG he refused to support Prop 8 and actually aided and abetted the opposition even though it was his official duty as AG to defend the resolution in court.

Pacific Justice Institute and Liberty Counsel are both going to take this to court but will probably lose all the way past the 9th Circuit due to the current makeup of the judicial in California. This is another case destined for the Supreme Court which could be vastly different than it now is when it gets there in a couple of years or so. Particularly if President Obama wins re-election and gets to choose new Justices in his second term which is more than likely considering the present age of some on the current court.            *Top
