-Implications: Another American Imam Wants to Limit Free Speech

by Dr. D ~ September 27th, 2012

English: Imam Qatanani

            (Imam Qatanani:  Wikipedia)

Mohammad Qatanani leads one of the largest mosques in New Jersey and is a personal friend of NJ Gov. Christie but joins a growing list of Muslim leaders in the USA calling for limits on Free speech:

“We, as Americans, have to put limits and borders [on] freedom of speech,” Qatanani, leader of the Islamic Center of Passaic County (ICPC), told TheBlaze. He explained that while Americans may ”have the freedom to speak their mind, ultimately, they “have no right to [talk about Muslim] holy issues“ as it will incite ”hatred or war among people.”

While Qatanani calls for and supports peaceful responses to perceived slanders of Islam, he is sympathetic to the fervor that drives the violence in the Middle East. He also understands the thinking and the divide between our people and explains that the Quran defines and requires a different understanding of freedom:

“They [Muslims] think our [American] freedoms are too much,” Qatanani said. “The freedom of the American people is so different from their [Muslims’] freedoms. We believe freedoms have limits and rules, otherwise we will get people into trouble…Freedom according to Islam must be according to the Quran and Sunnah. You can do [anything] you like within the teachings of these two resources. This is the difference and main reason [for the conflict].”

“People there [in the Middle East] don’t understand the American Constitution and freedom of speech,” Qatanani said. We have to understand each other because misunderstanding is a killing issue… The issue of Prophet Muhammad is very delicate – they [Muslims] will not accept in any way, anybody who talks badly about Muhammad.”

Response: This is an issue that is not going to go away. Muslim leaders all around the world are calling for international laws against the blasphemy and defamation of Islam, the Quran, and Mohammad. Now Muslim leaders even in America are calling for limits to our Constitutional rights in the USA when it comes to Islam.

In great candor Qatanani gives us a Muslim view that our freedoms need to be limited in deference to the Quran:

We believe freedoms have limits and rules, otherwise we will get people into trouble…Freedom according to Islam must be according to the Quran and Sunnah. You can do [anything] you like within the teachings of these two resources.

So there you have it, our freedoms need to be regulated and limited according to the teaching of the Quran and the practices (Sunnah) of Muhammad? Make no mistake about it, many Muslims in America feel the same way but it would also be a mistake to assume that all do or even the majority.

However, as the Muslim population increases in America, our rights and freedoms may be increasingly challenged in the future if Dearborn, Michigan is any indication. It is currently the one community in America where Muslims are in charge and free speech that is critical of Islam seems to be routinely curtailed and Christian Missionaries have been arrested, attacked and expelled for causing controversy:

-Dearborn, MI: Four Christian Evangelists Arrested at Arab Festival

-Dearborn, Michigan: Quran-burning Pastor Denied Permit and Will be Subject to Arrest

-Court of Appeals: City of Dearborn Violated Evangelist’s Rights

-Judge Bans Christian Sidewalk Ministry at Arab Festival

-Christian Street Preachers Attacked and Stoned by Muslims in America?

Fact is, if free speech becomes limited in any way when it comes to Islam then our freedom of religion is also affected and curtailed in ways that are clearly demonstrated in the Middle East. Many Muslim countries claim to have ‘freedom of worship’ but it is contained within the four walls of a religious building and a poor substitute of our freedoms of religion and speech as traditionally defined by our Constitution.
