-Egypt’s PM: US Must Limit Free Speech and Criminalize Criticism of Islam

by Dr. D ~ September 17th, 2012

In an interview with the BBC, Egypt’s Prime Minister Hisham Qandil called on the United States administration to take the necessary steps to end anti-Islam insults. He recognized that the US government did not produce the amateur film in question but nevertheless needs to do something about it anyway:

When the prime minister was asked whether the US should make amendments to its laws governing freedom of speech and expression, he replied,"I think we need to work out something around this because we cannot wait and see this happen again."

Qandil also called on the US "to take the necessary measures to ensure insulting billions of people – one and a half billion people – and their beliefs does not happen and people pay for what they do and at the same time make sure that the reflections of the true Egyptian and Muslims is well [represented] in Western media."

(Hat tip: Jihad watch)

Response: All over the Middle East they are calling for the USA and Western countries to limit free speech when it comes to Islam. This first came up when the Danish cartoons became an issue. Now with this latest uprising over a so-called movie, Muslim leaders are demanding action and refusing to hear any more excuses. Many Muslim officials and diplomats are petitioning the UN to bring the Anti-blasphemy legislation up for a vote before an upcoming assembly.

The question is, are we going to let the Muslim world re-define our Constitutional rights and limit our Free Speech in deference to their crazy sensibilities? Already there are those in our media and intelligentsia asking if ‘anti-Islam’ material isn’t the same thing as crying ‘fire’ in a crowded building and therefore subject to control and criminal charges?

Obviously there is a battle ahead for free speech and freedom of religion even in this country. Throughout the Muslim world, Christianity and Judaism are unapologetically and constantly defamed and lied about in their media and even in their school text books but we are the ones that have to change? I don’t think so.                *Top

Not to be unnecessarily obvious, but the real target of the Islamic anti-free-speech effort is not the hatemongers, but the Christians. Can you imagine a world in which your preacher’s every sermon was scrutinized for any hint of anti-Islamic bias, and he faced civil or even criminal penalties for such a sermon?

Can you imagine a sermon based on John 4: 16 in such a world?

Right on Brian. Teaching that Jesus is the Son of God and part of the Trinity alone would qualify since it defames Muhammad by contradicting his teaching and the Quran.

Typo in the foregoing! I intended to type John 14:6 but got the digits wrong.
