-Liberals and Conservatives Agree- Porn Harms

by Dr. D ~ September 3rd, 2012

Here’s something liberals and conservative can now agree on- pornography actually harms society.

From Citizen Link:

Conservatives and liberals can agree about pornography: It’s harmful to society and the future of our relationships.

One of Britain’s most liberal authors, Martin Amis, briefly discusses why he believes pornography is not good for society. He describes how pornography may be altering the human nature itself during an interview in Conversations With Slate.

According to the Slate article-interview,

“Martin Amis doesn’t attack pornography on moral or religious grounds. But the British author is deeply troubled by what he sees as the insidious effect porn is having not just on sexuality but on human nature itself…. Amis says the ubiquity of explicit material serves only to extend the distance between sex and love and thereby changes what he calls “the style of the whole operation.” ”

Response: For years, liberals and conservatives have been divided over the issue of pornography. However, it is now so rampant in Western society and so easy to access on the Internet that finally research is being conducted on the results. Now both liberal and conservative scholars are beginning to agree that porn is not good for society and personal relationships.

Conservative opposition to porn has traditionally come from a religious world view while the liberal side has always been rather permissive in this area. Now academic studies are showing that it is having negative effects upon personal sexual relationships and society as a whole.

From a Christian viewpoint we are tempted to say ‘we told you so’ but will conclude with the observation that the teachings of the Bible actually reflect what is best for humanity and all creation coming from the creator himself.

Now to the church and Christian leaders:

One study after another in the last several years has confirmed that viewing pornography on the Internet has become a major problem among Christians, Christian leaders, and even pastors. It is long over due for the American church to seriously address the problem and quit hiding our heads in the sand.  The future of the church is seriously in jeopardy. Porn is in the background and a contributing factor behind nearly every pastor or major Christian leader that has ‘fallen’ in the last 5 years or so. It is time to get real about the problem.              *Top
