According to several reports in the Arabic media, prominent Muslim clerics have begun to call for the demolition of Egypt’s Great Pyramids—or, in the words of Saudi Sheikh Ali bin Said al-Rabi‘i, those “symbols of paganism,” which Egypt’s Salafi party has long planned to cover with wax.    Most recently, Bahrain’s “Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs” and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt’s new president, Muhammad Morsi, to “destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what the Sahabi Amr bin al-As could not.”

This is a reference to the Muslim Prophet Muhammad’s companion, Amr bin al-As and his Arabian tribesmen, who invaded and conquered Egypt circa 641.  Under al-As and subsequent Muslim rule, many Egyptian antiquities were destroyed as relics of infidelity.  …

Response: This seems really crazy to readers in America or in Western countries. In fact the main stream media will not touch this story since it violates their PC standards of combating ‘Islamophobia.’ The truth no longer matters sometimes when it comes to Islam.

However, remember that the Taliban in Afghanistan blew up the Buddhist sculptures on a mountain side  when they were in power and recently radical Muslims in Timbuktu destroyed an ancient mosque and some tombs that were of a different sect of Islam. Daniel Pipes in an article cites an entire list of similar actions by Muslims over the years.

It remains to be seen if the Muslim Brotherhood which is taking the reins of the new government in Egypt is as radical as many believe and follows through with the calls of Islamist radicals to destroy the Great Pyramids. The ancient Egyptian artifacts bring a tourist trade that is a major part of the Egyptian economy. It doesn’t make any sense that the new leaders who promised a better economy and greater freedoms would start by destroying what little they do have. Can you just imagine the outrage?

However, the actions and sharia rulings by Islamist radicals make very little sense to infidel Christians like myself. Christians would like to see the whole world convert to Christianity but we have no illusions that it will happen by our own efforts before Jesus comes back. Remember, freedom of religion and religious tolerance is a product of the Christian Western civilization.

A major tenant of Islam is that all other religions must submit and eventually be eliminated by force if necessary. That is exactly what happens when Islamists rule a nation. Look at Afghanistan today after the reign of terror by the Taliban. There are no churches or synagogues left in the country and even under the present Western protected regime it is still illegal to convert from Islam under penalty of prison or worse. It is in that context that the Pyramids which reflect an earlier pagan culture and religion are actually in danger from militant radical Islamists no matter how crazy it sounds.

Regardless of what happens to the pyramids, when it comes to Egypt my greatest fears revolve around the statements and threats that many of the same radicals have made against the Christian Coptic community.  Ancient treasures and structures are one thing but the persecution, submission, and destruction of an entire community numbering in the tens of millions is something else entirely.               *Top
