-Gays in the Military: From ‘Don’t Tell’ to Celebrating with Pride?

by Dr. D ~ June 18th, 2012

The Pentagon, headquarters of the United State...

                                         (The Pentagon: Wikipedia)

How things have changed in our culture in one generation. The military which is usually one of the most conservative institutions in our nation has gone from ‘don’t you dare’, to ‘don’t tell’ under Pres. Clinton to ‘celebrate with pride’ under pres. Obama.

The Pentagon for the first time in our history is recognizing June as ‘Gay Pride Month’ in the American military. Here’s the story:

The Pentagon is set to salute gay and lesbian troops by marking June as Gay Pride Month.

The move comes nine months after the Obama administration’s repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that banned gay troops from openly serving in the military.

“We are a nation that welcomes the service of every patriot … a nation that believes that all men and women are created equal,” President Obama said after the repeal.

Defense Department officials are planning the first-ever event to recognize gay troops.

They declined to give details about the event but said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta feels it’s important to recognize the service of gays in the armed forces.

Here’s a second story of a same-sex ceremony being conducted in a military chapel at Fort Polk chapel in Louisiana. This has caused a controversy since DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) is still the law of the land and the State of Louisiana does not recognized gay marriages. The Pentagon had originally ruled that same-sex ceremonies could only be conducted on bases in a state where gay marriages were legal.  Here’s the story:

Christians and conservatives alike are up in arms about a recent same-sex ceremony conducted at a Fort Polk chapel in La.  …

In the wake of the ceremony, U.S. Rep. John Fleming, whose district includes Fort Polk, says the liberal social experiment with our military continues. He reinforced the truth that a same-sex marriage-like ceremony should not have occurred at Fort Polk, especially since the people of Louisiana have made it abundantly clear that our state does not recognize same-sex marriages or civil unions.

“My frustration is compounded by the fact that a social agenda, which has nothing to do with military readiness or our national defense, is being imposed on our men and women in uniform,” Fleming says. “The repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ made incidents like this inevitable, and makes the case for the Senate to follow the lead of the House of Representatives in passing legislation that prevents military facilities from being used for same-sex marriages or marriage-like ceremonies.”

Response: Same-sex ceremonies under the guise that it was only a ‘marriage-like’ ceremony and did not technically violate the Pentagon ruling? Apparently the rule of law no longer means a thing in this country when we have an administration issuing executive orders that the duly elected Congress has already spoken on (DOMA) or the state has voted down.

Meanwhile the Congress is trying to pass a law to protect military chaplains that do not wish to participate in same-sex ceremonies for religious reasons.

Nevertheless, none of this bodes well for unity in the military which is not suppose to be an institution burdened with social experimentation but is suppose to focus upon the defense of our nation and our way of life.             *Top
