The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah, recently called for the destruction of all Christian churches in the region. This declaration came in response to an inquiry by a delegation from Kuwait.

Raymond Ibrahim reports:

According to several Arabic news sources, last Monday, Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, declared that it is “necessary to destroy all the churches of the region.”

The Grand Mufti made his assertion in response to a question posed by a delegation from Kuwait: a Kuwaiti parliament member recently called for the “removal” of churches (he later “clarified” by saying he merely meant that no churches should be built in Kuwait), and the delegation wanted to confirm Sharia’s position on churches.

Accordingly, the Grand Mufti “stressed that Kuwait was a part of the Arabian Peninsula, and therefore it is necessary to destroy all churches in it.”

As with many grand muftis before him, the Sheikh based his proclamation on the famous tradition, or hadith, wherein the prophet of Islam declared on his deathbed that “There are not to be two religions in the [Arabian] Peninsula,” which has always been interpreted to mean that only Islam can be practiced in the region.

This is an authoritative declaration by The Grand Mufti who is the preeminent figure in Sunni Islam. The current Mufti-Abdullah is also the President of the Supreme Council of Ulema [Islamic scholars] and Chairman of the Standing Committee for Scientific Research and Issuing of Fatwas.

Note- There are no churches allowed in Saudi Arabia. Christians there worship illegally in secret.

Response: Currently there are many churches in Kuwait and nearly 12% of the country is Christian. A member of the Kuwaiti Parliament caused this query by his recent attempts to outlaw the construction of any new churches in the country. It will be interesting to see how the lawmakers in Kuwait respond to the Grand Mufti’s declaration.

For over a thousand years, Christian churches were substantially been left alone in the Middle East and Christians worked side by side with their Muslim neighbors in peace. Now in this current generation it has all changed. With the rise of radical Islam, Christianity and Christians are now being assailed and persecuted in nearly every country.

Kuwait has been a refuge for Middle Eastern Christians and a great deal of religious freedom has been allowed in the country. Now it could all change with this recent declaration. We personally have some acquaintances that are over there now planting churches. We will be watching for any updates.              *Top
