-Wisconsin Gov. Ignites a New Controversy by Calling it a ‘Christmas Tree’

For over 25 years they have been referring to the decorated tree in the Wisconsin state capitol the ‘Holiday Tree.’ Gov. Scott Walker started a new controversy by calling it- wait for it- a ‘Christmas tree.’

It all started with a press release from the governor’s office including a quote from Gov. Walker:

Today Governor Walker asked art teachers, parents, and youth all across Wisconsin to help the State of Wisconsin decorate the Capitol Christmas Tree. The theme of the tree this year will be Honoring 163 years of Wisconsin’s Veterans.  …

“As the holiday season comes, I am excited to announce that the Christmas tree displayed in our State Capitol will have homemade ornaments created by Wisconsin’s youth. I am hopeful we receive ornaments from all across Wisconsin so that we are able to showcase the diversity that makes up our great state. I invite all Wisconsin residents to stop by the Capitol and view our state’s holiday display.”

Not everyone was happy with the announcement. The use of the term- ‘Christmas Tree’ apparently offended some. Members of the Freedom From Religion Foundation protested the change and the Group’s president,  Annie Laurie Gaylor, said that it was insensitive to non-Christians:

“The reason that it was turned into a holiday tree was to avoid this connotation that the governor chooses one religion over another. It’s essentially a discourtesy by the governor to announce that. He intends that to be a slight and a snub to non-Christians, otherwise he would not do it.”

Response: Thus begins the battle for Christmas 2011. It’s all about ‘Christmas Trees’ today. What I just don’t get is this- exactly what ‘Holiday’ is a ‘Holiday Tree’ celebrating and what holiday besides Christmas has the tradition of decorating trees in December?

The whole name controversy is just crazy in the first place.

Please explain to me how a Christmas tree decorating the capitol like it has for more than 100 years or so is establishing a state religion? Also, how does calling a Christmas Tree a ‘Holiday Tree’ make it any better when everyone knows what it really is?

It is a Christmas Tree after all is said and done –just ask any child and they will tell you. Bet you can’t find one who will call it a ‘Holiday Tree.’ The truth is the truth after all is said and done.            *Top
