According to a study by a US government commission released on Wednesday, Schools and textbooks used in Pakistan teach intolerance and hatred toward minority religions.

The findings show why Pakistan is becoming far more Islamist and radical than it use to be and is increasingly supportive of hardline Muslim factions including the Taliban and al Qaeda in the country. According to the study:

"Religious minorities are often portrayed as inferior or second-class citizens who have been granted limited rights and privileges by generous Pakistani Muslims, for which they should be grateful."

Leonard Leo, the chairman of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, responded to the study with these comments:

"Teaching discrimination increases the likelihood that violent religious extremism in Pakistan will continue to grow, weakening religious freedom, national and regional stability, and global security."

The Commission study reviewed more than 100 textbooks from grades 1-10 from all of Pakistan’s four provinces. Researchers also visited 37 public schools, where they interviewed 277 students and teachers, plus 19 private Muslim madrases, where they interviewed 226 students and teachers.

Response: No wonder Christians are increasingly being persecuted and treated as second-class citizens in Pakistan. Obviously this is not going to be getting any better in the future.

By-the-way, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom has been doing a wonderful job in recent years looking at religious freedom around the world. The commission has been very plain about publicizing injustices where they find them.

The Obama Administration has been unhappy with the commissions portrayal of religious freedom in Muslim countries and is threatening to cut off funds and dissolve the commission.  It is a good time to contact your Congressional representatives and register your support for the Commission on International Religious Freedom.

Notice also that I picked up this story from a newspaper in India. The main stream press in America and the West is far less likely to pick up and run with a story like this. Although is is about Pakistani schools it is also tantamount to exposing how religious intolerance is supported and taught in a Muslim sharia dominated society.            *Top
