President Obama’s Agriculture Department today announced that it will impose a new 15-cent charge on all fresh Christmas trees—the Christmas Tree Tax—to support a new Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.

*UPDATE: This is now going to be delayed after the White House was flooded with all sorts of negative responses to the new tax.

According to White House spokesman Matt Lehrich:

“USDA is going to delay implementation and revisit this action.”

Here’s my earlier comments on the issue:

The opening shot has been fired and the ‘War on Christmas -2011’ has already begun!

Wow, it isn’t even Thanksgiving yet and the government has come up with a new way to make some money off of Christmas? I know the government is in debt and needs money but this is ridiculous.

The Good news at least is that they are leaving Christ and Christmas in the name and not calling it a ‘Holiday Tree Tax.’ Just wait tell some PC civil servant demands that the name of the tax be PC sanitized or worse yet some atheist org. sues to change it.

Also, I wonder what Obama’s environmentalist friends will say about his administration spending money promoting the Christmas tree industry? The fallout on this should be interesting.

Where does the executive branch obtain the constitutional power to impose a tax in the first place?

    Brian, Good point.
The current administration is implementing all sorts of programs right now in their effort to bypass the Congress. This administration has already done lots of different things which are not really supported by the Constitution. However, no one seems to really care or challenge these actions.
Last year the Congress voted down the administration’s plans for tighter environmental regulations on businesses. The administration is implementing the program anyway through executive order -just one example.

Leave the real Christmas tree alone! Obama should consider taxing fake Christmas trees!
