-Greek Orthodox Church Finally Gets OK to Rebuild at Ground Zero

New York City: St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was destroyed on 9/11/01 by falling rubble from the World Trade Center towers.

Church leaders finally reached an agreement with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on Friday (Oct. 14) to rebuild at Ground Zero.

Ten years have come and gone and the Port Authority which is in charge of rebuilding on the Ground Zero site had been blocking the church from being rebuilt. The Church’s original property was being appropriated by the port Authority in the new Ground Zero development plans for a parking structure and the church officials were in the process of suing the Authority and the city of New York over the whole issue

The new agreement, brokered by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, allows the church to rebuild at a larger nearby location in exchange for dropping all litigation against city officials.

Response: The rebuilding of the St. Nicholas Church had become a scandal and a national issue since City officials were supporting the building of a huge mosque (So-called Ground Zero mosque) nearby that had not been in the area before. But the one worship facility that was actually destroyed in the attacks on 9/11 received seemingly no support at all from the city. In fact the Port Authority was attempting to take  their land for other purposes and actually blocked the church from being rebuilt.

So many around the country thought it ‘politically correct’ to support the Muslim effort to build a new mosque near Ground Zero even if it offended many of the families of the victims of 9/11. On the other hand, the efforts of the Orthodox Christians to rebuild their destroyed church on their own property surprisingly went largely ignored by the media.

The agreement is a great birthday present for me. I look forward to following the rebuilding process.

Here’s several articles that we have written in the past about the continuing slight of the church by the Port Authority and NY City officials:
