-Do a Few ‘Catholics’ Still Insist Galileo Was Wrong? Really?

Here we go again, main stream journalists going out of their way to demonstrate how dumb and stupid some Christians can be – in this case ‘Catholics’.

Everyone knows that the earth revolves around the Sun but in a recent article published in the LA Times, the writers find A few crazy ‘Catholics’ who still believe that Galileo and modern science is all wrong –that the earth is really at the center of the universe after all.

The only problem is that these supposed ‘Catholics’ reject the teachings and leadership of the current Roman Catholic Church. One of the supposed ‘Catholics’ cited in the article attends a parish run by the Society of St. Pius X.

This ‘Society’ is not officially recognized by the Vatican and the priests and bishops in that organization do not represent the church and it’s sacraments. In fact it is a schism and at least four of it’s bishops have been excommunicated in the past though that extreme penalty has been lifted by the current pope.

Pope Benedict XVI himself made the following declaration concerning the Society of St. Pius X:

“Until the doctrinal questions are clarified, the Society has no canonical status in the Church, and its ministers – even though they have been freed of the ecclesiastical penalty – do not legitimately exercise any ministry in the Church.”

While these folks may consider themselves to be ‘Catholics’ , the Roman Catholic Church has a different view entirely. Not only that, official church scientists like Brother Guy Consolmagno of the Vatican Observatory support the modern scientific view.

So what is this story really all about?

It isn’t really about ‘Catholics’ and the Roman Catholic Church after all. It is about a tiny schismatic group of believers that the media can make fun of.

It is merely the latest demonstration of the secular media template, that people of faith can be crazy -Christians and Catholics in particular. Forget the fact that these folks should not have been identified as ‘Catholics’ in the first place.            *Top
