Jerry Buell, the “Teacher of the Year” who was suspended for comments he made on his personal Facebook page has finally been reinstated.

The Lake County, Florida, School Board concluded a week-long investigation into his unfavorable comments about the recent legalization of homosexual marriage in New York. Buell has been exonerated and was allowed to return to the classroom on Thursday.

Harry Mihet, senior litigation Counsel for Liberty Counsel, responded to the good news:

"This is a great day for the Constitution. By fully exonerating Mr. Buell, the Lake County School Board has reaffirmed what the rest of Americans already knew. The First Amendment protects the right of public servants to express their personal opinion without any fear or intimidation. It is a shame that Mr. Buell had to miss three days of teaching for his employer to learn this lesson."

Response: This really did become a national story with Buell being subjected to a great deal of undeserved humiliation. It also left thousands of Christian teachers across America wondering if the First Amendment no longer applied to them. Thankfully it has been resolved and common sense has prevailed.

The main stream media consistently quoted only a small part of his comments leaving many to erroneously conclude that ‘hate’ was the basis for Buell’s diatribes against gay marriage. However, in context his opinions were obviously derived from his religious convictions.

Here is the full text of his supposedly controversial Facebook comments:

“I’m watching the news, eating dinner when the story about New York okaying same-sex unions came on and I almost threw up. And now they showed two guys kissing after their announcement. If they want to call it a union, go ahead. But don’t insult a man and woman’s marriage by throwing it in the same cesspool of whatever. God will not be mocked. When did this sin become acceptable?”

“By the way, if one doesn’t like the most recently posted opinion based on biblical principles and God’s laws, then go ahead and unfriend me. I’ll miss you like I miss my kidney stone from 1994. And I will never accept it because God will never accept it. Romans chapter one.

There are tens of millions of Christians in this country who probably feel the same way. In Buell’s defense, the school board could not find even one case where a student was mistreated by him for any reason. The only complaint against him was filed by a 2002 Mount Dora High School graduate who happened to be offended by Buell’s Facebook comments and started this witch hunt in the first place.            *Top
