-UC Berkeley: Anti-Semitism and Harassment Tolerated on Campus?

by Dr. D ~ August 15th, 2011

We have documented in the past how Muslim student groups have run amok at UC Irvine and have recently received some discipline for disrupting a speech by Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren. We have even explained in the past how Muslim student groups have sponsored events that created an anti-Israel and anti-Semitic environment on college campuses across the country.

Now there’s a lawsuit brought by a couple of Jewish students at UC Berkeley documenting the toleration of anti-Semitism and the actual harassment of Jewish students and at least  one Jewish professor on that campus.

“The lawsuit claims  (UC) Berkeley has tolerated years of programming by anti-Israel student groups Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and the Muslim Students Association (MSA) despite reports of Jewish students being cursed at, threatened and assaulted.”

One event in particular, sponsored by Muslim student groups, lead to direct harassment for Jewish students. During “Israel Apartheid Week”, the SJP group set up mock check points at the main entrance to the campus with student in uniform carrying  realistic looking fake assault weapons as part of the event. Known Jewish students were intimidated and in a couple of cases even assaulted as they came on campus.

The complaint is that the campus authorities did nothing to correct the situation and the radical student groups are still allowed to officially meet and sponsor events on campus.

Response: Radical Muslim groups are tolerated on college campuses all across the country. At the same time, Christian groups are being kicked off campus. Many schools do not allow religious requirements for student group leaders but Muslim groups are apparently not challenged or limited by the same rules.

Now anti-Semitism is even being tolerated because of a liberal bias against the State of Israel. There can be no excuse for this and they have crossed the line. Free speech -yes, harassment -no. Harassment of any kind should not be tolerated on American campuses. Hopefully this lawsuit will be successful and set an example for college administrators all across the country.              *Top
