-Lutherans Are ‘Anti-Catholic’?

Are Lutherans necessarily ‘Anti-Catholic’?

No.

It all started with an article in The Atlantic that claimed that GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann was ‘anti-Catholic’. It was based upon Bachmann’s past membership in Salem Lutheran Church of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod:

Bachmann was a longtime member of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stillwater, Minn., which belongs to the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), a council of churches founded in 1850 that today comprises about 400,000 people. WELS is the most conservative of the major Lutheran church organizations, known for its strict adherence to the writings of Martin Luther, the German theologian who broke with the Catholic Church and launched the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. This includes endorsing Luther’s statements about the papacy.

The article seems to be saying that Lutherans are ‘anti-Catholic’ and therefore Michele Bachmann is ‘anti-Catholic’ since she use to belong to a Lutheran church? Forget that fact that Bachmann is no longer part of the church.

In an article today, the Rev. Mark Schroeder, president of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) issued a response to the controversy and pointed out that nothing has really changed in the last 500 years and his denomination continues to hold the historic Lutheran position when it comes to the Roman Catholic papacy whether it is PC or not.

Response: Personally I reject that characterization of Lutherans as being ‘Anti-Catholic’ simply because they rejected the papacy 500 years ago and continue to do so today plus contend that some Catholic teachings are incorrect. Using the same criteria, I guess all protestants could be considered ‘Anti-Catholic’.

This is another case where political considerations are the motivation behind deceptive and ignorant claims and assertions by the media -especially when it comes to religion.

In this case the writer thinks nothing about slandering millions of Lutherans in order to score political points against Michele Bachmann and alienate Catholic voters against her. The truth is that this ‘news’ is actually 500 years old.             *Top
