-Mennonite College Bans National Anthem Because of War References
by Dr. D ~ June 8th, 2011
Goshen College in Northern Indiana has decided not to play the “The Star-Spangled Banner” before sporting events because of its ties to war. Goshen College’s board of directors says it will find alternative ways to honor the country while upholding the pacifist traditions of the Mennonite Church-affiliated school.
The 1,000 student college had been playing an instrumental version of the national anthem before games and other events this year. However, some were upset over the song’s lyrics which contain references to war. The Mennonites have maintained a long pacifist tradition.
Response: Americans have died in nearly every generation in order to maintain the freedoms that we enjoy in this country. Freedom of religion is one of those very important rights. The news of this action is bound to go viral and bring on a variety of Responses.
The Mennonites have a long theological tradition of pacifism. The actions of the college should be viewed in this light. Even though I may disagree with their stand I surely respect their religious position and call for some understanding for these brothers and sisters in Christ. For them, it is not a matter of slighting America or being un-patriotic but a matter of faith.
Maybe “America the Beautiful” could be chosen as a replacement since it’s already being used at many mainstream sporting events. *Top
