-Dalai Lama Gives Up Political Position but Remains Tibetan Spiritual Leader

On Tuesday (5/31/11), the Dalai Lama formally relinquished his political and administrative powers over the Tibetan government in exile. However he retained his religious position as the Tibetan spiritual leader.

Lobsang Sangay, who was elected last month to replace the Dalai Lama as “head of state” over the Tibetan government in exile, now assumes that political role. This was done at the request of the Dalai Lama in order to encourage the democratization of his government:

“The essence of a democratic system is, in short, the assumption of political responsibility by elected leaders for the popular good,” he said in his March message to Tibet’s parliament-in-exile. “In order for our process of democratization to be complete, the time has come for me to devolve my formal authority to such an elected leadership.”

Response: This will actually work out better for the Dalai lama and will increase his influence. Most of the world knows him as a spiritual and moral leader rather than a head of state.

Since the Chinese government invaded and took over Tibet, the Dalai lama’s government has been in exile and he has not been allowed to come back and visit his homeland. The Tibetan people still consider him as their spiritual leader. Perhaps now the Chinese officials will allow him to visit, though that is probably expecting too much from the Chicoms.

The Tibetan head Lama hopes to lessen the pressure that China continues to put on countries who allow him to officially visit. Now he won’t be doing so as an official ‘head of state’ but merely as a religious leader instead. This should placate the Chicoms and allow the Dalai Lama to visit more countries than he’s been able to in the past.            *Top
