Last night (Tuesday 5/10/11) the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) approved a measure that would allow openly gay men and women to be ordained as clergy.

The move brings to a close to one of the more contentious debates and struggles ever faced by the 2.8 million-member church. A similar measure to allow gay clergy was defeated two years ago.

However, last Summer the church’s General Assembly passed an amendment to its Book of Order (denominational regulations) opening the door to gay, non-celibate clergy including elders and deacons. The amendment finally received the needed approval of a majority of the church’s regional bodies last night when the Presbytery of the Twin Cities (Minn.) voted to approve the pro-gay amendment.

Up until now, the church’s Book of Order banned non-celibate clergy who did not live "within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman." The newly approved amendment removes a requirement of chastity for non-married clergy opening the door to practicing Gay men and lesbian woman for ordination and the leadership positions of deacon and elder within the denomination.

However, the amendment which goes into effect in July (2011) does not specifically require presbyteries to start ordaining gay and lesbian candidates. It merely makes it legal under church rules if they choose to do so.

Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) joins a growing number of liberal mainline protestant churches that ordain openly gay clergy including:  the United Church of Christ, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and The Episcopal Church.

Response: It is sad to see a fine denomination that was theologically sound turn its back on its own legacy and allow the modern secular culture to define a new morality for it which is detached from its Biblical roots. What now is to be the future standard of this denomination –the shifting sands of cultural change?

Look for 100’s of more conservative congregations to bow out of the denomination now and maybe even whole presbyteries. It really is a shame but this venerable denomination is headed for some chaotic times and in the end its numbers will probably be reduced rather significantly.

So much effort and resources will now be expended on denominational battles and schisms rather than preaching the Gospel and expanding the Kingdom and rule of God. The mission of the church will suffer and the missions of the church overseas will also probably end up being short-changed in the process.

There are some very fine pastors and leaders in that denomination, many that I went to seminary with years ago. I really feel and pray for them right now as they seek God’s guidance over how they should respond. May the effects of this be far better than I am expecting.             *Top
