-Did Bin Laden’s ‘Appropriate Muslim Burial’ Contain a Pardon for Osama and a Curse Against Christians and Jews?

The Obama administration has made a big deal out of the claim that Osama bin Laden received an ‘appropriate Muslim burial’ at sea. Exactly what did happen and what did the burial involve?

According to the Washington Times the Pentagon indicated that “prepared religious remarks” were read at bin Laden’s funeral but gave no additional information. However, John Brennan, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, was asked to elaborate on the ceremony he said:

“It was done appropriately with the appropriate people there.”

“Burial at sea takes place on a regular basis. The U.S. military has the ability to ensure that that burial is done in a manner that is, again, consistent with Islamic law, as well as consistent with what the requirements are for a burial at sea.  And so that burial was done appropriately.”

If it was done according to US military procedure for burials of those of the Muslim faith than the ceremony would have included:

Service for the committal of a person of the Muslim faith” lays out explicit steps that must be followed in a Muslim sea burial.  The body must have been washed and wrapped “as required for the bodies of Muslims,” which refers to ceremonial cleanings that must be done by another Muslim. Those who have gathered to pray at the burial—ostensibly crewmembers since family is not allowed at sea burials—must face Mecca.

Formal funeral prayers must be said—and are specifically listed in the service used by the Navy.  In the part of the service in which supplication for the deceased is made, the prayer to be used includes the following:

Now here is the real controversial part:

“O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, pardon him, grant him security, provide him a nice place and spacious lodgings, wash him (off from his sins) with water, snow and ice, purify him from his sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt, replace his present abode with a better one, replace his present family with a better one, replace his present partner with a better one, make him enter paradise and save him from the trials of grave [sic] and the punishment of hell.”

The formal Muslim prayer would have included the above plea for pardon and Paradise for mass murderer bin Laden. but worse than that prior to this prayer a passage from the Quran would have been quoted :

3.  Al-Fatihah
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Praise be to God, the Cherisher
and Sustainer of the Worlds; Most Gracious, Most Merciful; Master of the Day of
Judgment. Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek. Show us the straight way, the way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, those whose portion is not wrath, and who go not astray. –Sura 1:7

It is common knowledge among Muslims and acknowledged in commentaries on the Quran that the highlighted part of this passage is a backhanded comment against Jews and Christians. Jews are considered in Islam as ‘those who are worthy wrath of Allah’ and Christians are ‘those who have gone astray’ and therefore among those who are considered to be unworthy of Allah’s grace.

Therefore, if the Burial at sea went according to the official U.S. Naval prescription for Muslims then it would have included a pardon for bin Laden and the traditional Quranic curse against Jews and Christians. If so, it is no wonder that administration officials did not want to go into detail about the ‘appropriate Muslim burial’.             *Top
