-We Are All Giants Fans Now

Dodger Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

We are all SF Giants Fans now. A San Francisco Giants fan who was beaten at Dodger Stadium after last week’s opening game shows signs of brain damage and today remains in critical condition according to doctors.

Bryan Stow was beaten up in Dodger Stadium parking lot after the Dodgers’ 2-1 victory over the Giants on March 31. Two young men in Dodgers clothing began taunting and swearing at him because he was wearing Giants gear. Stow was punched in the back of the head then fell down seriously bashing his head on the pavement. Then the two gang–like ‘Dodger fans’ continued to kick him in the head while he was down while others tried to protect him from further injury.

Stow a week later is still in a coma while family and friends continue to hold a vigil at the hospital. He has a severe skull fracture and serious bruising to his brain’s frontal lobes. At one point, doctors had to remove the entire left side of his skull to ease pressure on his brain. Stow remains in a medically induced coma.

Bryan Stow is a 42-year-old paramedic and father of two from Santa Cruz. A real hero who is usually saving the lives of others now his own is in danger. Radio interviews of his family have demonstrated what wonderful people he and his family really are. Meanwhile hundreds of ‘real’ Dodger fans have stopped by Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center to show support and to pray for Bryan and his family.

Interestingly, the Dodger owner has not contacted the family and tastelessly has his PR folks proclaiming that Dodger Stadium has become far safer than it used to be under the former owner.

The beating has become a major issue in LA while hundreds of others have come forth complaining about intimidation and violence that they have received or observed at Dodger Stadium over the last few years. Many are saying that it is no longer a place that one can safely bring a family to, that gang members or wantabes have taken over the venue.

Fortunately today the LA police announced that they would be doubling the number of police at the home games.

Dodger owner Frank McCourt and his estranged wife are showing that they have no class at all in the handling of this situation. At one point they claimed that the stadium is safer than it used to be but then they hire ex-LA police chief William Bratton to improve the security. Fact is that the Dodgers had opened the new season without a chief of security in order to save money.

It is sad to see one of the classiest, most storied, and venerable sports franchises in moral decline. Walter O’Malley must be turning over in his grave. Today in Southern California we are all Giants fans in support of Stow and his family. Please join me in prayer for Bryan Stow and his family. Please pray for his complete recovery.               *Top
