The US Supreme Court has ruled 8-1 that the despicable so-called Westboro ‘Baptist’ Church family can continue to picket military funerals. It was a matter of free- speech rights which the justices say are confirmed in the Constitution.

Hooray for the Constitution but boo for the abuses of the Westboro folks who continue to carry signs, picket military funerals, and generally be mean and ornery all supposedly in the name of God.

The case was brought by Albert Snyder, father of a 20-year-old marine, Lance-Corporal Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq in 2006 and buried in Maryland. Snyder was offended by the Westboro church members who carried placards outside the funeral of his son saying:

“Thank God for Dead Soldiers and You’re Going to Hell”

Response: I really don’t like the ruling but it is probably best not to let groups like this spoil and curtail the rights of everyone else. However with all of the rights and blessing that we have in this country we should also take care to use them responsibly. I don’t believe that the Westboro family is acting responsibly at all, to God, to the teachings of Jesus, or to this country.

The best tactic to use against these folks is for Christians and friends in the target communities where they are going to rise up and carry supportive placards of their own and in numbers where the hateful folks cannot even get close to the grieving families. This has worked well not on several occasions.              *Top
