-Pray for Osama bin Laden?

Pray for Osama bin Laden? That is what this Christian prayer ministry is proposing.  Adopt a Terrorist For Prayer (atfp.org) suggests that Christians should be praying for terrorists and provides the opportunity to ‘adopt’ a favorite from their list of 165 known terrorists or major terrorist leaders or supporters. Here’s the opening message from the prayer site:

Why Pray for a Terrorist?
Why Pray for a Sponsor of Terrorism?

Where is the Christian response to terrorism? If the struggle against violence done in the name of Islam is primarily spiritual, then defeating it requires a spiritual response.

This site features FBI and State Department identified terrorists and terrorism sponsors. Terrorism inspires fear. According to Jesus, the antidote to fear is love.

When we hate, we are reactive victims. When we love we seize the initiative. Love for country helps soldiers to risk their lives. Love for children enables parents to discipline them without being intimidated. Love for us took Jesus to the cross. Love for enemies will give courage to face, overcome, and transform them and the environment that breeds them.

Historically, Stephen was the first fatality in terrorism directed against Jesus’ followers. As Stephen died from stoning, he prayed, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." Later, Paul, who had supervised Stephen’s stoning, met Jesus in a vision and repented.

Can we pray today like Stephen prayed then? Would Paul have repented if Stephen hadn’t prayed?

Adopt a terrorist for prayer and register to be tabulated in this spiritual initiative against violence that is sponsored and perpetrated by people who think that they are following God.

Response: Great message! Remember, Jesus did teach that we should love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matt. 5:44). Prayer does change things and this conflict has a spiritual dimension that goes way beyond the flesh and what we see in the natural.

All along we have been suggesting that Christians should be praying for the Middle East and what is happening there. This site provides a good way to be specific in our prayers and maybe a new ‘Islamic’ Paul might be the results of our prayers. Stranger things have happen through prayer. After all, a Son of the founder of Hamas was converted in prison.

As an alternative one could also pick one of the current leaders in the Middle East to pray for like Gadhafi or Iran’s  Ahmadinejad or even maybe the Grand Ayatollah Khamenei.            *Top
