-Muslim Religious Leaders Behind Uprising in Libya?

Here’s a quote from a group of Muslim religious leaders naming themselves the ‘Network of Free Ulema of Libya’  and calling on all faithful Muslims to revolt against Moammar Gadhafi and the current Libyan leaders:

"They have demonstrated total arrogant impunity and continued, and even intensified, their bloody crimes against humanity. They have thereby demonstrated total infidelity to the guidance of God and His beloved Prophet (peace be upon him)," said the group, called the Network of Free Ulema of Libya.

"This renders them undeserving of any obedience or support, and makes rebelling against them by all means possible a divinely ordained duty."  -Declaration obtained by Reuters on Monday.

Response: The opposition in Libya is casting itself here as ‘true followers’ of Islam and claiming that it is the ‘divinely ordained duty’ of all faithful Muslims to revote against Gadhafi and his government.

This is but one example of the religious undercurrent in all of the on-going demonstrations and revolts across the Muslim world.  The Western media has miscast it as substantially a call for ‘Western-style’ freedoms.

Part of the revolt does personally revolve around the oppressive excesses of the petty dictators that have been ruling them with a hard hand for decades. However there is also a religious aspect to the revolts that is not really being reported. More on that later.           *Top
